Baba Stiltz
2020* (*Music That Never Was But Is Now)
One of the joys of Baba Stiltz's work has been how unpredictable it is. It's always excellent, but stylistically can veer from off-kilter deep house and oddball pop to raucous alt-rock and trippy techno. So, what's on offer on the Stockholm-based artist's latest Public Possession 12"? 'Day Tripping (12" version)', which kicks things off on side A, sees him giddily join the dots between country-fried rock, droning motorik Krautrock and leftfield house - all heady male/female vocals, gnarled guitar licks and metronomic drum machine hits. Flip-side 'Journals', a collaboration with pals Larjosto and Skagstedt, sounds a little like one of Fleetwood Mac's funkier moments of the 1970s given a subtle 21st century twist. It's genuinely fantastic and one of the Swedish producer's most immersive and infectious tracks to date.
