Dizzee Rascal
Showtime
Almost a year has gone by since Dizzee released his groundbreaking (and Mercury music prize-winning) debut album, Boy in Da Corner. With the dust finally settling, the most famous teenager from Bow found some time to duck away from the madness to work on the follow-up. Over the past 12 months, dizzee has travelled the world, and has been on a rollercoaster ride of new experiences. Showtime is a bigger-sounding album than Boy but its equally individual. Its a force of nature: a volcanic ride of crazy wordplay, ghetto techno and bottom-heavy bass. Boy in da corner was stunning because of its penetrating power and singular evocation of inner city life, and showtime hits the spot for similar reasons but with added bass power and, crucially more tunes. What Mills has dropped in neurosis he has gained in precision-guided anger.
