Maximum Joy

Some of the original Maximum Joy material was famously licensed to legendary US label 99 Records and the band became an anthem on the New York club underground, a cult staple at Danceteria and on late-night radio. Although their sound very much conformed to that very specific crossover between punk, club and rap mutations so dominant at the time, there’s a distinctly Bristolian whiff about these production that also connects dots with UK soundsystem culture and is perhaps a direct and immediate precursor to Bristol’s infamous Wild Bunch crew which emerged at around the same time.
