Hooverian Blur – Triple Menace/Skatterbox (WNCL Recordings)

Hooverian Blur – Triple Menace/Skatterbox (WNCL Recordings)

Part of WNCL’s recent run of double a-sided 10” singles, this release from Hooverian Blur highlights the forward-thinking ethos of South London’s Jason Alexander, aka Warlock.  \n \nA perennial figure on the rave scene since its earliest days, playing on various pirates and working at Kickin Record, he’s continued through its various mutations, becoming one of London’s gabber DJs as hardcore splintered and pushing a grime/breakbeat/dubstep hybrid in the 2000s with his Rag & Bone label.  \n \nNewest alias Hooverian Blur has been filtering all these old school influences through a modern lens, refusing to let nostalgia set in. ‘Triple Menace’ is kind of footwork meets techstep, dark and raw thanks to bleepy machine funk and discordant sounds. The snares of ‘Skatterbox’ hint at classic breaks, but again there’s a contemporary twist to its grimy bass and ADHD intricacy. Pushing things forward, this is the cutting edge of the hardcore continuum. \n \n
