Harmonious Thelonious

Combining the spirit of American minimalism, via German microhouse, with a passion for rhythms of various persuasions, Harmonious Thelonious, aka Stefan Schwander, is a master of infectious grooves. \n \nThe eponymous title track of his ‘Metro Trip’ EP for Berlin-based Disk is a case in point, all hip-wiggling syncopation and melodic build as it unfolds over six minutes of muted joy. It’s accompanied by a ‘Rhythm Edit’ which pares it down to drum and bass essentials, dubbed out FX taking it in a heady direction. \n \n‘Yusuf’ pits Middle Eastern motifs against dark, droning bass, landing sounding somewhere between Kompakt and Acid Arab, while ‘Oriente’ is a swaying, swirling cloud of psyche keys and tribal whoops. ‘Y.
