DJ Abstrac – Took My Love Away (Rat Records)

Some of DJ Abstrac(t)’s garage records fetch a pretty penny, which may not be surprising given the resurgence of the sound. What is more surprising, however, is that the producer, who previously made drum and bass, is actually from San Francisco. \n \nReleased on DJ Deekline’s Rat Records in 2001, ‘Took My Love Away’ echoes the dark jazziness of the era's contemporaneous d&b scene, while also predicting the advent of broken beat with its syncopated rolling drums, a familiar First Choice vocal adding the hook as Abstrac gets funky. ‘The Name Of My DJ’ throws in breaks, stabbing bass and a hip-hop vocal to dirty up the groove. And ‘Swing’ is more minimal, drums leaning toward familiar garage patterns as it also embraces the kind of deep, dubby atmospheres that would latter characterise dubstep. \n \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfI38CHGi-s \n \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx6zDBrmeo4&t=1s \n \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjsdnALbjnU&t=1s
